Fuchsia - 'Hawkshead'
'Hawkshead' is one of the best of white-flowered bush fuchsias and happily grows out of doors to give a bush up to four or five feet high when mature. It was bred in the early 1970s from Fuchsia magellanica var molinae and Venus Victrix (which more than a century earlier in 1840 was the first white sepalled fuchsia).
Hawkshead carries a mass of small white flowers through a long season and is an ideal variety for growing a fuchsia hedge, either by itself or mixed in with a red flowering variety of magellanica parentage and similar proportions
I currently have a young Hawkshead bush about thirty inches high against a low wall facing north. I'm writing this in mid-February and it is already budding along almost the full length of its branches. I left them untrimmed at the end of last season and in a month or two will just trim back any dead ends from which there is no growth - its Spring "haircut". This will be its second full year, and I'm looking forward to watching its development through the season.
